 CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA SCORE  Historical Notes

Central Pennsylvania SCORE held its first organizational meeting on October 3, 1991, but its conception began several years earlier.

At that time, Nancy Desmond was Director of Community Education at the State College Area School District. Among the teachers for her continuing education classes were Bill Majeske, Millie Bubash, and Mildred “Mim” Lynch. Between them, they had been teaching Small Business Management Training for several years in the late 1980s.

Somehow, they heard of SCORE, the Service Corps of Retired Executives, and decided that SCORE would be a good resource for recruiting other teachers. Their effort, however, ran into roadblocks so the idea was shelved until 1991.

In 1991, Nancy Desmond was able to interest other community groups in establishing a SCORE chapter in central Pennsylvania. They included: Chuck Mong, then Executive Director of the Industrial Development Corporation of Centre County, and Tom Dolan, president of the Private Industry Council of Centre County. They talked Bill Majeske into spearheading the effort. They called an informational meeting in early September of 1991.

Attending the meeting were Ray Becki, Assistant District Director of the U. S. Small Business Administration for Western Pennsylvania, and Chet Davies, District Manager of SCORE’s Western Pennsylvania District.

Those attending were presented information about SCORE and given membership applications.

The first organizational meeting was held on October 3, 1991. At that time, those who were seriously interested submitted membership applications. The original members as of October 3, 1991 were:
Ed Atkinson, Millie Bubash, J. Carroll Dean, Jim Decker, Bill Harding, Bill Majeske, Fred Mamett, Bob McCormick, Lloyd Mount, Dave Phillips, Lenny Uman, Bill Zang and Bob LaCroix (who joined on 11/18/91).

The first regular monthly meeting was held on November 6, 1991. Officers were elected at that time: Chapter Chair, Bill Majeske; Vice Chair, Bob McCormick; Secretary-Treasurer, Dave Phillips.

At that time, we were under the auspices of the Pittsburgh Chapter, which provided seed money.

The official charter for the Central Pennsylvania Chapter #618 was presented on March 16, 1993. Charter members were: Ed Atkinson, Betty Majeske, Millie Bubash, Bill Majeske, J. Carroll Dean, Fred Mamett, Jim Decker, John McClure, Tom Dolan, Bob McCormick, Bill Harding, Lloyd Mount, Bob LaCroix, Dave Phillips, Mildred “Mim” Lynch, and Lenny Uman
